Meet the Newest Addition to our Family—MORE Health for Kids is here!

April 20, 2021 by Amanda Raitz Hébert

“I refused to accept anyone giving up on a young child,” Hope Lewis, MORE Health Co-Founder and CEO.

Hope was working as an international finance attorney when her life took a turn. Her client’s 18-month-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer, and physicians declared the case hopeless. Hope suspected this verdict was the product of an overburdened system and thought more could be done. She reached out to her personal and professional network and traveled back to the United States, where she solicited opinions—and a treatment plan—from renowned oncologists.

Today, that little girl is fifteen, healthy, and cancer-free.

This story inspired the formation of MORE Health. Hope saw how a second opinion gave this little girl a second chance at life and asked herself how she could provide this level of care to people everywhere. With a desire to give everyone access to the world’s leading specialists when facing a life-changing illness, Hope joined forces with our Chief Technology Officer, Bo Hu. They formed a technical team and developed our proprietary cloud-based platform. Then, with our Chief Medical Consultant, Dr. Robert Warren, a world-renowned liver transplant surgeon, they built our team of Physician Specialists, selecting only the best of the best.

In 2011, MORE Health began informal operations, providing leading specialists to friends and family in need of a second medical opinion. MORE Health was incorporated in 2013 and established its company headquarters in Silicon Valley, San Mateo, California. We offer the service as a benefit to employers, self-funded groups, brokers, insurance companies, and individuals on a case-by-case basis.

Since its inception, our mission has remained the same—to provide access to the best medical minds in the world when facing a serious life-changing illness. Now, our mission expands with MORE Health for Kids.

Unfortunately, serious illnesses can occur at any age. We want to do our part to help children and families in need.

A 2018 special report published in The New England Journal of Medicine cited accidents or unintentional injuries as the leading cause of death in children and adolescents in the United States. Firearm-related injuries came in second, and the third leading cause of death was childhood cancer.

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO), the statistics on children with cancer are alarming:

  • Each year, there are an estimated 15,780 children between birth and 19 years of age diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.
  • One in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.
  • Globally, there are more than 400,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year.
  • Worldwide, every three minutes, a child is diagnosed with cancer.

In 2019, The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 5.7 million children under five years old died mostly from preventable and treatable causes. With child obesity rates growing, kids now have an increased chance of developing heart disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, and cancer.

No matter the disease or injury, it is heartbreaking for parents to watch children suffer from a serious illness. It causes tremendous stress and worry for the whole family. Medical second opinions provide peace of mind and confidence to help you make the right decisions for your family.

We believe every kid deserves more. Our goal to provide individuals access to the highest level of healthcare continues with MORE Health for Kids.

Guiding our mission is Jonathan Finlay, MD, ChB, FRCP. Dr. Finlay is a world-renowned pediatric neuro-oncologist, or as he likes to call it, “a child’s brain tumor doctor.” He is an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is Principal Investigator of NEXT / Head Start 4 Consortium Trial at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Among his many awards, he is the first pediatric specialist to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Neuro-Oncology.

Dr. Finlay will serve as our Pediatrician-in-Chief. At MORE Health for Kids, we provide parents virtual second opinions with leading specialists from world-class academic medical institutions. We deliver this service through MORE Health’s proprietary digital platform, accessible in the U.S. and internationally.

Finlay stated, “I have worked with families and physicians throughout the world for over the last forty years and have seen how devastating serious illness can be to a child, parents, and siblings.” He went on to say, “I’ve also seen how new treatments have provided children with both improved survival rates and improved quality of life. That’s why I’m delighted to join MORE Health for Kids to provide children and their families with the highest level of healthcare when they need it most.”
